Founded in 1896, the AR has a proud tradition of challenge and criticism, scouring the globe for architecture that provokes and inspires, and relying on its immense archive and critically acclaimed writers to shape architectural discourse. Combine this with a rich history of contemporary editorial design and you have a magazine of interest beyond its natural architectural audience.

This April 2026 issue is dedicated to ‘Universal Housing’, championing housing as a human right and bringing together a series of case studies that propose different ways of living together and alternative financial infrastructure. These examples include a communal home for survivors of domestic violence in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a co-operative in Amsterdam proving that luxury living is viable when shared, and a look at the abundant social housing scheme seemingly under threat in Vienna. Elsewhere, Charlotte Banks summons a rallying cry for reform in today’s housing markets: ‘Without a culture uplifting the right to dwell, rent controls have all the effectiveness of a daub of paint over black mould’. Plus, the last bubble houses in Dakar, high rise courtyards in Uzbekistan, and India’s drive to accommodate low income rural residents.
