A new title ‘for the cultural enthusiast’, Enthousiasmos is the brainchild of film directors Roman Coppola and Johan Chiaramonte, each issue inviting readers into the inner lives of a particular individual of cultural or artistic significance.
Marking a departure from the smooth calligraphic masthead of prior editions, issue four leads with a decidedly more DIY typeface, corresponding with cover star Debbie Harry’s punk roots. An icon of the New York underground, Blondie’s influence extends far beyond downtown’s hallowed dancehalls—as demonstrated in the diverse subject matter that follows Debbie and Chris Stein’s extensive inaugural Enthousiasmos interview. Inside, you’ll find nostalgic features on Hollywood’s deadliest blondes; legendary star snapper Sam Shaw; and the punk pulse of Fear City in the 70s; plus, a reverential profile of Andy Warhol’s Interview, and of course, a beach blonde-approved recipe for shrimp in a wheatgerm crust.
As for the title, allow Coppola and Chiaramonte to explain: ‘From the Greek enthousiasmos, enthusiasm captures better than any other word that sense of exaltation that overwhelms us during new encounters, conversations, discoveries and other magic moments. And because enthusiasm is contagious, this magazine will set out to meet personalities and artists who inspire us, to better ask ourselves what inspires them.’
