‘Wandering but not lost’
The inconspicuous cover design is a nod to issue eight’s theme ‘Against Visibility’. Inside, Errant Journal questions the Western world’s insistence on spotlighting the undiscovered narratives of marginalised communities.
Rich in versatile perspectives, Musa Shadeedi gives an overview of Islamic queer history, proposing it as an alternative to ‘the western visibility-centric gay narrative’, Irene de Craen converses with Michèle Boulogne on the existence (or non-existence) of planet Venus, plus more deep dives into topics such as Igbo spirituality, surveillance and the ethical limits of hyper-visibility.
‘Against Visibility aims to be a practice embedded in the concrete of our everyday lives. From there, it moves in and out of focus, from the personal to the collective, the imaginative and distinctively historically or geographically situated. For opacities can coexist and converge, weaving fabrics. To understand these truly one must focus on the texture of the weave and not on the nature of its components.’
On the Journal
At work with Irene de Craen: ‘(The magazine) provides me with the ideal form to work on the questions I’ve had for many years. And considering my long term relation with and love for printed matter, it really makes more sense than anything I’ve done before.’
