Pit began life exploring the world of food and fire and has since evolved into a gastro-curious little magazine exploring everything and anything food-shaped.
This 16th issue asks the timely question, ‘What’s the deal with American food?,’ addressing the double-edged sword of food that can be both addictively delicious and catostrophically unhealthy. It’s all here: egg cream sodas, Mississippi tamales and Detroit’s Coney Island hotdogs, plus Spam, Cracker Jack, diners…
Broader pieces look at Pop Art’s obsession with food and drink, recall how the Black Panthers movement fed its supporters, and contextualise Trump’s food policy twists against the longterm failures of US government food policy.
On the Journal
Magazine of the Month, May 2022: ‘Potatoes are one of the least photogenic things I can imagine shooting for a cover, but give them a face and expression and they become engaging. Shoot the decorated potatoes with a certain earnestness—these are very carefully art directed Potatoheads—and the resulting image sums up Pit. These guys are having fun as they explore their world.’
