Aperture #258

215 x 270 mm, 164 pages
New York, USA
Editor: Michael Famighetti
Art direction: H2/SW/HK

The quarterly magazine of New York-based photography foundation of the same name, Aperture is the flagship representation of their commitment to contemporary photography.

Issue #258 explores the relationship between photography and painting, two mediums historically pitted against each other but sharing overlapping interests and techniques:

‘In this issue, family photographs—totemic objects—find their way into canvases... Paint is overlaid onto found pictures. Dutch still lives are invoked with a motion-triggered camera in an ordinary background... artists render film stills and famous photographs in oil and acrylic only to recirculate these simulacra on iPhone screens, onto which various fantasies are projected.’

With work from Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Lia Darjes, Christopher Wool, Shirana Shahbazi and more.
