Founded in 1896, the AR has a proud tradition of challenge and criticism, scouring the globe for architecture that provokes and inspires, and relying on its immense archive and critically acclaimed writers to shape architectural discourse. Combine this with a rich history of contemporary editorial design and you have a magazine of interest beyond its natural architectural audience.
This November 2025 issue, themed ‘AR Emerging’, revisits three past AR Emerging award projects to explore how they have evolved—transforming their environments or, at times, struggling to sustain support from city councils. Featured are Barkow Leibinger’s ‘Biosphäre Potsdam’, revisited ahead of its approved 2028 renovation; Ahadu Abaineh’s treehouse in Addis Ababa, where his vision of ‘growing homes’ continues to take root; and Li Xiaodong Atelier’s ‘Bridge School’, now lying dormant and prompting reflection on how architects interpret—and meet—the needs of the communities they serve. In addition, the issue spotlights the latest AR Emerging Awards shortlist, from Accra-based DeRoche Projects, pioneering prefabricated rammed-earth systems in Ghana, to the international duo Kuma and Elisa, whose playful, unconventional interventions reimagine traditional urban fabrics.
