‘Dedicated to New Writing’

In the space of just four issues, The Whitney Review of New Writing has established itself as a vital cultural reference point in New York and beyond. Multi-magaziner Whitney Mallett (of Pin-Up, Editorial and Gayletter) set out to shake up the traditional format of the literary review.

Instead of long and sprawling essays by well-established writers regularly spotted in other literary reviews, The Whitney Review offers a mix of long and short, and alongside the book reviews you’ll find in this fifth issue a review of a step counter watch, a museum show, and even Donald Trump’s rash of executive orders. Plus, its tabloid format featuring only text—there are no images in this publication—looks great and highlights its subject.

The visual cue this issue is the tilt; as per the front cover, the content of every page is set at a slight angle, lending a disconcerting feel to the texts.

On the Journal
At work With editor Whitney Mallett: ‘The designer and art director Immanuel Yang takes such good advantage of text as a texture. It’s pragmatic to avoid wrangling photo shoots. Text works best on newsprint. We’re scrappy.’
