We’re excited to confirm the first details of this year’s ModMag London. We’ll be back at Conway Hall on Thursday 1 November for our annual celebration of editorial creativity.
Now an established feature of the publishing/design event calendar, this will be our sixth ModMag in London and follows our first New York edition earlier this year.
We’ll be following the familiar format: a day of talks from international magazine-makers, mixing the new and old, the large and small, the indie and mainstream.
This year’s theme is Reinvention, something magazines must continually strive for, whether that be revolutionary change or subtle development. Our first four speakers are ideally placed to contribute on this subject.
Emmet Smith has recently overseen the complete reinvention of National Geographic, one of the world’s most iconic magazine names, emphasising its print heritage while bringing a clean modernity to its pages. As he told the magCulture Journal earlier this year, ‘This redesign wasn’t about changing something that people love, but about giving them more of it in a fresh and contemporary way.’
Tom Meredith’s redesign of Elle UK won him the prestigious Art Director of the Year title at this year’s PPA Awards, an acknowledgment of the sure-handed graphic shift he has applied to the magazine since his appointment last year.
For its twelfth issue, The Plant appeared in a larger format with refreshed typography. This was a delicate change, but one that somehow distilled the biannual title into a purer form of itself.
And indie football mag Mundial has rapidly grown from labour of love to serious project, its team growing fast to adapt to a scale of readership that has surprised even its publishers.
