‘Exploring the threads connecting ecology, culture and spirituality’

This seventh issue marks a decade since the transcendental moment in which editor Emmanuel Vaughan–Lee saw a film storyboard he was working on reconfigure in his mind, inspiring the concept of Emergence. The closing out of this ten year cycle coincides with plans for a physical base from which the team hope to host residencies, fellowships, labs, retreats and courses—hence the theme of this edition: ‘Seeds and Structures’.

Inside, the team explores ‘the kinds of seeds and structures we will need, through physical, metaphysical, and symbolic perspectives,’ including a feature from Marko Milovanovic admiring the topography and psychology of the Aran Islands and a trio of interviews with ecological researchers Suzanne Simard, Monica Gagliano and Merlin Sheldrake. Elsewhere, Llewellyn Vaughan–Lee ruminates on the ‘imaginal seeds’ and foundational qualities of the future, Haleh Liza Gafori presents five poems by the 13th century Persian poet Rumi, and David James Duncan delves into the mystics and texts that have forged his own beliefs.

As ever, it’s a gorgeous object in its own right, featuring a blend of paper stocks, with illustrations, graphs and both monochrome and full-colour photography interwoven throughout.

On the Journal

At work with Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee: ‘We released our first print edition, an annual, in September 2019. It pulls what we felt was the best work we published online from our first four issues into a print experience. It’s comprised not only of essays, interviews, poetry, and photography from those issues but also print adaptations of films, virtual reality, and multimedia experiences.’
