‘A Journal for Artistic Exchange’
Magazine designer Alex Hunting’s first foray into self-publishing is a bright, large-format magazine packed with a wide variety of stories. Built around a single piece of commissioned text—for this second issue, ‘The Merchant of Colours’ by Ben Okri, which opens the issue in large text across fourpages—the magazine unfolds as a series of responses to that text. Writers, photographers and illustrators respond to specific parts of the writing, in the style of creative footnotes.
It’s a clever idea, well-executed, and it brings to life the original text nicely. Contributors this time include Mattia Balsamini, Maximilian Virgili, Nadia de Vries, Paul Rousteau, Eva Helene Pade, Nishant Choksi, Professor Anja Hurlbert, Luke Evans, Max Miechowski, Andrew Berardini, Louis Mason and more.
On the Journal
At Work With Alex Hunting: ‘The artists were encouraged to choose their own passages. I selected contributors I thought would resonate with the piece, but it was always intended as a space for them to create something special and personal.’
