A new biannual for cinephiles launched by the eponymous New York arthouse cinema, The Metrograph celebrates the ‘different personalities and artistic sensibilities drawn together under the big tent that is cinema.’
Smartly designed with art director Matt Willey's recognisable touch (note that Port-like block logo), it certainly feels like a serious film lover's magazine: Jean-Luc Godard on the cover notwithstanding, this debut issue balances a cast of heavy hitters in Ari Aster, Ann Hui, and the magazine's first ‘centrepiece interview’ with Clint Eastwood with more niche pieces on costume in Edward Yang's work, the renaissance of Kim Novak, and Filipino thrillers.
Elsewhere, there's anatomies of scenes with Mark Lee Ping-bing, a brilliantly titled column ‘The Shot The Made Me Gay’ describing sexual awakenings, and Steve Martin interviewing a movie magic consultancy. Metrograph also adds its own stamp with a map of filming locations around the cinema in New York, an A-Z list that runs across features, and two comic strips about its screening booth.
