Article #6

Issue six of the well-tailored, bi-annual men’s fashion and lifestyle magazine celebrates all things British – from shoemaking and Shropshire to 90s club culture and life on the streets during WWI. With four gold studs puncturing the cover’s centre like bespoke jacket cuffs (below), Article’s sophisticated elegance is obvious from the outset, and it’s possibly one of the only magazines I can think of that has such a meticulous ‘Collectors Edition’ (complete with its own jacket sleeve and double-sided poster, also below).

IMG_3557Article stands out because of its attention to detail: in terms of design, the magazine luxuriates in open stitched binding (above) – an elements that I’ve likened before to collectors editions of record packaging. Its articles are in-depth and personal: we get a glimpse into the world of Savile Row’s Richard James, Covent Gardens’ Zeev Aram explores the paintings of Eileen Grey, and menswear designer Lou Dalton discusses her childhood in the country. Features also reach into other areas beyond fashion – there’s a story about George IV’s pet giraffe (below), and an interview with cover star Hugh Dancy (known for his role as Will Graham in Hannibal).

IMG_3552 IMG_3553For each issue, Article invite a different image maker to participate in their ‘Circular Project’ – a series of circle-themed paintings or pictures that fit neatly into the centre of the rectangular page. Lucy McLauchlan’s edition (above) draws inspiration from her immediate environment so that a hint of Birmingham seems smuggled into the evocative shapes. This carefully curated and simple project gives the magazine even more of a bespoke quality.

IMG_3554Another departure from the obvious is an interview with Kirigami artist Marc Hagan-Guirey about his paper-cut homages to Star Wars (above). Although not obviously British or anything to do with clothes, the interview suits the tone of the publication: Hagan-Guirey’s technique reflects the attentiveness of Article, the way it precisely considers every single fold and cut.
