Deidre Dyer, No Man’s Land

Today we’re at work with Deidre Dyer, executive editor of No Man’s Land, the magazine launched earlier this year by US women’s work/social space The Wing. We hear about her working life in New York as she prepares to travel to London and speak at ModMag London later this week.

Tell us about your typical journey to work
My commute is pretty chill. During my 30-minute trek on the Q train, I usually read through emails and get a little to-do list started. If I’m feeling lazy, like I felt today, I’ll just scroll through Instagram and the NY Times News App, passively taking in selfies and a little bit of the news.

Once I’m off the train, I’ll pop into The Smile To-Go on Howard street and pick up some oatmeal & maybe a small coffee if I’m feeling sluggish.

Describe the state of your desk and what you can see in your office
My desk is a tangle of Apple headphones, my handbag, Nike water bottle, lip balm & hand lotion (the weather just took a dip so I’m working extra hard to fight being ashy) and last but certainly not least, Oprah paraphernalia: her British Vogue cover, a candle, a mug & custom mousepad...it’s basically a shrine.

Which magazine do you first remember?
My earliest memories of magazines would have to be the issues of Jet and Ebony that my mom had delivered to the house. My family didn’t subscribe to many publications, so I remember getting hyped everytime a new issue arrived in the mail. Also, it was definitely affirming to see black and brown faces on their cover.

Which magazine matters to you the most right now?
I’m super interested in Mold, Broccoli, GQ Style (the biannual w/ Tyler the Creator on the cover), Riposte, The Gentlewoman and, always, Apartamento.

Can you describe your magazine in three words?
Thoughtful. Cute. Weird

What are you going to be talking about at ModMag?
I’m excited to talk about the zig zag journey that lead me to making magazines. Also the importance of Rihanna, weed and finding your lane.

Who are you most looking forward to hearing speak alongside you at Modmag later this week?
I’m no good picking faves! I’m stoked to hear everyone and nerd out over magazines. lolzz

What’s going to be the highlight of this week for you?
The highlight for me will definitely be packing my suitcase for the conference and pulling together looks for the entire trip.

What will you be doing after this chat?
A gazillion more emails.
