Magazine Week is a PPA-sponsored event next month (17-23 September) designed to promote magazines to readers, sellers, advertisers – anyone interested I guess. It's good to see the Association promoting our medium, and the campaign has it's heart in the right place, but presentation of the campaign lets the whole thing down. The website features good information and appearances by high-profile editors, but the design means it comes across as just another trade campaign using dumb graphic devices.
Don't believe me? Watch this video and weep. At a time when magazines are apparently threatened by the faster, animated world of interactive media, is this the best our industry can do to sell itself visually? As magazine makers we know how powerful design and content are when combined to express a message – why couldn't the campaign harness that power?
