How to design really good magazine covers
A talk for designers and magazine art editors by Brett Lewis Group Creative Director IPC Media
A medium-sized news agent will stock just over 1,000 titles every month, most magazine purchase decisions are made in 3.5 seconds. Every magazine is audited and sales figures are the weekly or monthly reflection on how well you are performing. Any mistake, bad call, wrong decision will be instantly recognised. This is a business that thrives on competition, creativity, skill and determination.
Brett has art-edited 12 magazines, from Melody Maker to Country Life. Worked on well known titles from Time Out to iD. He is currently the Group Creative Director of IPC Inspire, and primarily works in Special Project Development and oversees the aesthetic and the brand content on the groups 47 titles. He left the then LCP in the late 80's and his first job was in the art department of Time Out.
