mono.kultur

In contrast to some of the large-format magazines featured here recently, German publication mono.kultur is small, coming in at a pocketable A5 size and generally consisting of about 16 pages. As it's name suggests, each compact issue deals with one subject, in the form of a single lengthy issue with one artist/designer/creative.

Each issue appears in a slightly different form – they've used different folding techniques, appeared only in black and white, used different papers – but is always perfectly formed and carefully finished. The latest issue I've seen, above, is about architect David Adjaye and uses a yellow graduation to pull you through the pages, the reach of the yellow increasing spread by spread. It's the attention to detail that grabs you – careful, delicate design with no shouting or screaming on the page, just quiet, intelligent design. Yellow, blue and black plus four-colour images a set of colour images made up from those three colours, below.
