Speaking, contributing

I’m speaking at the following two events in Europe next month. If you’re at either (or both!) come and say hello.

First up I’ll be joining my Colophon colleague Mike Koedinger at the Belvedere Festival in Rome on Thursday 21 October. Then the following week I’ll be joining the OK Festival team as guests at Rotterdam’s annual Image Festival. The theme is music so I’ll be talking about music magazines on Friday 29 October.

Meanwhile, though I’m not there in person, I’ve contributed to a one-off newspaper being created and published during the American Society for News Design’s annual workshop event in Denver that kicks off this evening. The newspaper is being created ‘live’ during the 72-hour meet, under the expert guidance of i design director Nick Mrozowski.

My contribution is the first in what I hope will be a series of pieces to be published as ‘magCulture/Index’. This first Index builds on an earlier reading list I prepared for US Stack, and features brief reviews of an alphabetical list of 26 independent magazines. It’ll appear here shortly.

Finally, my latest column for Creative Review (below) uses the new book ‘TypoMag’ as a starting point for a look at the importance of typography in magazine design.
