It’s always exciting to see a new magazine tackle an overlooked subject, but even better when that magazine does so with a panache that wins over the reader. Our April Magazine of the Month Nicked Journal does just that, covering the day-to-day realities of the British legal system with a refreshing editorial approach.

A magazine built of leftovers and designed using Microsoft Word may not sound the most exciting prospect. Yet new launch Offal demonstrates just how useful such limitations can be. Mixing leftovers, experiments and overlooked writing, it’s a great read, brought to life by an intriguing design approach.

Magazines can be many things, but distribution channel for student design research promises something special. February’s Magazine of the Month delivers on that promise: the latest issue of A Line Which Forms A Volume, the annual print output from MA Graphic Design students at the London College of Communication.

As soon as I saw the latest issue of MacGuffin I knew it was a possible Magazine of the Month. The only thing holding me back was that I’ve written about the mag so often—was there anything new to say? Spending Christmas with the issue convinced me there was plenty to say about the gorgeous 13th edition.

The latest issue of US magazine Analgam is another brilliantly radical look at the intersection of typography, language and power. Themed ‘Collapse’, it again presents challenging content in challenging but beautiful layouts, making the most of its simple but effective black and white typography.

Issue four of Disco Pogo sees the dance music mag really hit its stride. We love its name, its mix of old and new music and artists, and the way its cover strategy reflects that mix. Take a look through its pages as we settle on a Pet Shop Boys portrait as the perfect visual metaphor for the magazine as a whole.
