Tony Brook, Unit Editions

We’re getting super-excited about this year’s Modern magazine day on 2 November. In the run-up, we’ll be introducing our guest speakers to give you a flavour of what we’ll be hearing on the day. We start with Tony Brook, creative director at London studio Spin and co-founder of graphic design publisher Unit Editions.

What’s your favourite cover of your magazine/publication?
The first issue of Spin: Adventures in Typography, from earlier this year.

What has been your magazine highlight of 2017?
The interview in Printed Pages on William Eggleston stands out for me. A fascinating man and an insightful, entertaining article that was very nicely designed and illustrated. The same issue had an article on Tim Noble and Sue Webster that was very cool too.

What was the one mistake that taught you the most about making magazines?
Initially, making things too complicated, you lose focus.

Which other speaker are you most looking forward to hearing at ModMag?
Mirko Borsche

What will you be talking about at ModMag?
I will be talking about the making of the Unit Editions titles ‘Impact 1.0’ and ‘2.0’ on design magazines, journals and periodicals (above) which was a mammoth journey, and I plan to share the second issue of Spin Adventures in Typography, which we are all super excited about.
