Notebook is a publication dedicated to cinema art and culture, created as an extension of indie cinema streaming platform, MUBI.

Physically, it’s a beautiful thing: with its matt pages, expressive typography and plenty of colourful stills. Along with editor Davide Cazzaro (of Nang magazine), the team behind Notebook hope to celebrate, explore, appreciate and analyse the beauty of film. It’s a lovely addition to our film mag selection.

The theme on the spine of this fifth issue reads ‘Step 1: Hold magazine in your hands’—the first in a set of fourteen steps that the team have devised (in lieu of a typical editor's note) for you to enjoy the magazine at your own leisure. But beyond that, this issue explores the ‘making and doing’ side of cinema, with tips on how to start your own cinema space, a visual report on beautiful restoration of a 1910s theatre in Bologna, recipes for developing film sustainably, and more on drawing cartoons, the art of fake blood and a taxonomy of falls in silent films. Also included is an unbound series of stills—part of Italian filmmaker Rosa Barba's Printed Cinema series—inviting experimentation and rearranging.

Equal parts conceptual and practical, it's an especially strong issue.
