Aesthetica #131

210 x 296 mm, 148 pages
York, UK
Bimonthly
Editor: Cherie Federico
Creative director: Eleanor Sutherland

Produced in the north of England, Aesthetica offers a much-welcomed, non London-centric view of art, design, photography and general culture.

Issue #131 for June/July 2026 is themed ‘Time and Place’, examining how creatives ‘inhabit and interpret the world around us’. Throughout the work featured, space is posited as something fluid, offering a meditation on its transformative potential.

This edition’s cover story showcases the floral self-portraits of Australian photographer Tamara Dean, exploring the intrinsic relationship between the human body and nature. Elsewhere, discover an interview with acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma— renowned for his pioneering of wooden architecture—discussing his latest monograph ‘New Works’; a survey of eight exhibitions to visit this summer—from Lebanese-American photographer Rania Matar’s ‘Where Do I Go?’ at Boston’s Robert Klein Gallery to a Julio Le Parc retrospective at the Tate Modern; and a conversation with Tokyo-based street photographer Laurence Bouchard, who was recently featured in the photobook ‘Now is Now Tokyo’, published by teNeues.

Other featured photographers include Svetlana Talanova, Daniel Rose, Jiang Zhi, Frank Relle, Nuno Serrão, and more.

On the Journal:

‘We look for ‘art’ in the broadest sense, featuring works that are both visually engaging and conceptually or culturally important. There are layers to the images and pieces that we publish, all with ties to a rapidly changing world, from the climate crisis to conversations around social justice’ – Kate Simpson, Associate editor.
