Don’t Blink is a new zine dedicated to contemporary subculture, that recognises the meaning of the word ‘subculture’—as it was originally intended—no longer aligns with the speed at which pockets of culture evolve today. Hence the name: ‘Don’t blink, you’ll miss it’.
Each issue is devoted to documenting one night out at a specific venue, with this sophomore edition taking readers on a London night out to Lost—the club set in a former Odeon Cinema on Shaftesbury Avenue that rocketed from obscurity to the mainstream seemingly overnight. Inside, readers are greeted with a colloquial introduction in defence of gatekeeping from editor Heloise Darcy. Then, a series of candid and timestamped ‘Notes on the night’ unfold throughout; the front row watching ‘Spring Breakers’ share their thoughts on everything from the film itself to contemporary signifiers of cool; in ‘Smoke Break’ a selection of smokers face a round of rapid fire interview questions; and a review section covers all three of the films on the cinema bill that evening. Plus, a whole host of other features spanning thoughts on club classics, artist profiles, and a peek behind the scenes of a night spent reporting.
