‘Journal of photographic tales from Brazil’
Launched as a reaction to increasing extremism and intolerance in Brazil, Quilo presents the work of largely local contemporary photographers and short story writers in an attempt to portray the country in a more nuanced light.
Arriving in a large ‘bookish’ format, this sophomore edition is devoted to the Portuguese notion of ‘saudade’—a form of profound longing, defined by Quilo editor Mico Toledo as ‘a constant desire for something other than here and now’. Presenting the work of 17 photographers, one essayist and two short story writers, the issue is a gorgeous meditation on the emotional state of saudade, and the tropical Brazilian coastline of Praia da Saudade itself.
It’s beautifully designed and produced, and is a welcome arrival from an area of the world we see little of on our shelves.
