Velvet Pages is a new title devoted to a bookish audience with an interest in contemporary culture, brimming with literary essays and cultural commentaries, plus profiles on musicians, fashion designers and writers. Despite riffing off the newspaper format in size and paper stock, the magazine sets out to channel the spirit of the glossies ‘in a way that feels modern, thoughtful, and relevant’.
Inside this sophomore edition, titled ‘Reading is Hot’: Madeleine Woon uses the launch of Kaia Gerber’s book club, Library Science, as a hook to explore renewed public interest in paperbacks and libraries, reading as a cultural cachet, and the debate surrounding intellectual posturing; Sueda Babaygit speaks with two prolific vinyl collectors—or ‘diggers’—ruminating on the stories and connections they credit to their archives; and Woon speaks to Palestinian-Lebanese fashion designer and Renaissance Renaissance founder Cynthia Merhej, delving into how losing her home due to the war in Lebanon altered her sense of freedom, the fight against relentless productivity, and collaborating with costume designer Miyako Bellizzi on Durga Chew-Bose’s 2024 ‘Bonjour Tristesse’ adaptation starring Chloë Sevigny.
