A certified magCulture favourite, this is the tenth issue of David McKendrick’s ‘Good News’ magazine, Paperboy.

This anniversary issue, titled ‘The Dirty Issue’, celebrates hedonism and the human urge to ‘get down and dirty’, drawing from the French phrase ‘Nostalgia de la boue’—translated literally into English as ‘Nostalgia for mud’.

Inside, Alex Bilmes excavates the history of faeces, from ‘ancient excreta’ unearthed in 1972 at the site of a new Lloyds Bank in York, to the infamous dump of Leopold Bloom, and that ‘Trainspotting’ scene, concluding that poo has the power to unite; Daisy Gibson pens prose from the perspective of a well-trodden doormat; and writer Lou Stoppard weighs up the pros and cons of accidental nepotism, a phenomenon made apparent to her through her own mistaken patrilineal descendance from playwright Tom Stoppard.

Elsewhere, models take out the trash in ‘Bin Day’, a quirky editorial shot by Kuba Ryniewicz, and outfits go awry in photographer Charly Gosp’s ‘Wardrobe Malfunctions’, both cleverly styled by Stuart Williamson. Plus, menswear designer Kim Jones shares his favourite ephemera, including Allen Ginsberg’s credit card and a first-edition copy of D.H Lawrence’s controversial novel ‘Lady Chatterly’s Lover’.

On the Journal

At work with David McKendrick: ‘I don’t want it to sound too basic, but I drew up a wish list of all the great accomplished people I have worked with over the years, and I dreamt a little, and in an old fashioned manner got on the phone, told them about Paperboy, and the idea and begged the question “will you be part of this?” and much to my surprise, everyone seemed up for it.’
