Spillll is a risograph-printed zine series dedicated to amplifying marginalised voices and reflecting on food politics, queerness and feminism across East and Southeast Asian cultures. Created by a queer, female, and non-binary ESEA creative collective hailing from South Korea, Thailand, and Japan, each issue brings a new topic to the ‘(digital and transnational) dining table’.
This duotone black and blue fifth issue—interspersed with offset printed bright pink illustrations on tracing paper—explores the significance of the ‘invisible and intangible’ across ESEA cultures, featuring a collection of essays, poetry, short stories, conversations and recipes on ‘the spiritual world’. At the centre of the issue, readers will find a gatefold double-page spread: on the outer panels, the four editors engage in ‘Table Talk’, acquainting each other with culinary rituals native to their respective homes, whilst the inside provides an illustrated look at food offerings across ESEA cultures and their meanings.
Elsewhere, compare Western and Southeast Asian approaches to hauntology, listen to ghost stories from Indonesia to the Philippines, and discover recipes for Heot-Jesa-Bap, Stir Fried Mi Sea, and Summer Vegetable Somen Noodles.
