The Architectural Review #1517

230 x 280 mm, 102 pages + supplement
London, UK
Monthly
Editor: Manon Mollard
Art directorTom Carpenter

Founded in 1896, the AR has a proud tradition of challenge and criticism, scouring the globe for architecture that provokes and inspires, and relying on its immense archive and critically acclaimed writers to shape architectural discourse. Combine this with a rich history of contemporary editorial design and you have a magazine of interest beyond its natural architectural audience.

Issue #1517 asks 'What is a good room?' as the domestic space is explored both traditionally and nostalgically, as well as, abstractly. Kirsty Bell analyses Adolph Menzel's 'Balkonzimmer' painting and the solitude and indulgence it brings to an artist re-creating their own space on canvas. Alternatively (and depressingly), Charlotte Grace reflects on the absence of living rooms within the chaotic London housing market and the responsibility this then shifts on to the kitchen and bedroom to become multi-purposed. A relatable topic that AR have responded to with a range of broad and fascinating stories and ideas.
