‘Surf? Yes, and no’

Acid is a non-traditional surf magazine, looking at the wider world through the lens of surfing. Beautifully designed, it aims to permeate the rigid membrane of surf culture, connecting it to everything that surrounds it.

Staying true to its ethos and the unpredictability of the sea, this seventh issue loosely follows the ‘cracks’ in the romanticised image of surf culture—with plenty of digressions in-between. Pieter Wiersma pens a poetic reflection on the duality between stone fortresses and sand castles—‘What’s the point, even in play, of doing and redoing what nature will eventually destroy?’; autodidact photographer and professional skateboarder Paul Grund showcases a selection of grainy film photographs from his LA-based series ‘Blemishes’; Camille Azaïs reframes the conversation around coastline recession, urging readers to follow the sea’s lead; red, yellow and green filtered pages—the colours of Ghana’s national flag—introduce readers to Surf Ghana, the NGO supporting local youth through art and sport; and Olivia Wünsche presents the emotional and empirical findings of an acid trip on a northern Polish beach.
