An endearing and super graphic zine created by illustrator Minyue Hu, Daughter of the Universe catches you by surprise; behind its pastel-hued, nineties internet aesthetic (some stories are laid out in Microsoft Paint windows) are a series of eleven vignettes recounting various moments from Minyue‘s childhood in China, often quite bittersweet.
There are reflections on China‘s one child policy, hardships her great-great-great grandmother faced, the shame surrounding birthdays, being bullied in school and losing a treasured pet rabbit, each story accompanied by a vivid illustration or collage.
A deeply personal project that ultimately reflects a journey of growth and self-care.
