‘For the outsiders, by the outsiders’

A biannual indie magazine with a rapidly growing fanbase, Phantasmag aims to revive ‘the corpses of 80s horror zines’, applying a queer and female-centred lens to the genre.

This fifth issue arrives off the back of the recent success of the digital-first, micro-budget horror features ‘Obsession’ and ‘Backrooms’, taking stock of ‘a historic year for the genre’. Inside, the team look back over the horror films and TV shows haunting the public imagination this summer. Havana Moon opens the issue with a celebration of David Lynch’s neo-noir classic ‘Blue Velvet’ as it approaches its 40th anniversary. Elsewhere, Jack Haven reflects on getting the call up for Jane Schoenbrun’s (‘I Saw the TV Glow’) new queer slasher film ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’; ‘Wednesday’ breakout star Hunter Doohan sits down with editor Lana Thorn ahead of the premiere of the sixth instalment of the ‘Evil Dead’ franchise, ‘Evil Dead Burn’; and visual artist Maggie Dunlap introduces her new book ‘Pure Evil, Pure Innocence’, alongside a broader discussion on American true crime and the evolution of mediated violence in the 21st century. Plus, Ellie Addis dissects five legendary fashion moments to arise out of the summer slasher micro-genre.
