Founded in 1896, the AR has a proud tradition of challenge and criticism, scouring the globe for architecture that provokes and inspires, and relying on its immense archive and critically acclaimed writers to shape architectural discourse. Combine this with a rich history of contemporary editorial design and you have a magazine of interest beyond its natural architectural audience.
This September 2026 issue is dedicated to the United States, looking at plans for Donald Trump’s presidential library, and assessing the recently completed Barrack Obama library.
Plus a mix of other contemporary projects, from the growing number of architects designing detention facilities, to more optimistic buildings like the Emma S Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center. The latter project is not enough, however, for the editors to avoid concluding, ‘This year might mark the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence, but the founding principles it set out – life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness—feel like a distant dream in today’s diminished democracy.’
