The 2018 BSME Awards
Earlier this week, the evening after the Stack Awards, the British Society of Magazine Editors held their annual Awards dinner in London. The two events probably had no more than four people in common present, yet the cause was the same: celebrating the best magazines.
‘The best’ is subjective of course, and while Stack specialises in independent magazines the BSME Awards have a far broader base.
But if there were few of the same people present at each ceremony, there were plenty of publications with crossover appeal from a magCulture standpoint. The BSME shortlists included The Economist, Elle, Wallpaper* and Wired, all available at our shop. Eye magazine editor John L Walters and art director Simon Esterson both won trophies for their relevant categories, following on from BSME wins in recent years by The Gentlewoman, Delayed Gratification and Index on Censorship.
Closer links between mainstream and indie mags is a vital thing for the industry, and the BSME committee seem intent on pushing this. If you make it to the end of the list here you’ll see I was awarded the Mark Boxer Award, for services to the industry. I’m hugely grateful to be honoured in this way and hope it’s a further sign that the BSME is waking up to the indie world.
Congratulations to all the BSME winners:
