Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff, gal-dem
The countdown to magCulture Live continues; today we meet speaker Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff. She’ll be introducing gal-dem, the online and print publication highlighting the stories of women and non-binary people of colour. As well as being their head of content, Charlie writes for other magazines and newspapers and is editor of a book about the Windrush generation.
What are you doing today?
I am at work at gal-dem, and my plan for this evening is eating Thai food at Skeehans, a legendary pub in south east London, and sleeping – I have a football match I’m playing in tomorrow!
In 2018 gal-dem collaborated with The Guardian Weekend Magazine. Read more.
Who/what inspired you to work in magazine publishing?
The Guardian’s Weekend Magazine
Tell us about the new print edition and its redesign
The new edition is based around the theme of Un/Rest. It’s always been on my agenda to upgrade our print output and dedicate the time we need to make it into something beautiful. This issue is split between the two themes and hopefully a restful and rollicking delight.
Please share a single story/page from the website or the magazine that sums up gal-dem.
Founder Liv Little’s letter about the future of the project.
How can magazines make a difference in 2019?
Think beyond the page.
Who are you looking forward to hearing/meeting at magCulture live London 2019?
It’s always a pleasure to hang out with Felicia Pennant of Season Zine, and while I’ve interviewed her before, I’ve never seen her give a talk about her brilliant publication!
