Yesterday’s interview with Rob Orchard of Delayed Gratification completed my 12 interviews in 12 days at the Pick Me Up festival. It was hard work but rewarding, a rare opportunity to question some of the UK’s best independent magazine makers back-to-back. Thank you to everyone who helped it happen: to the Pick Me Up team, particularly Karishma and Rosie; to the speakers who generously gave their time to the project; the audience, especially those that returned each day; to Ian Pierce for photographing the speakers; and to Park Communciations who are helping us produce a printed volume of the talks. I’m still processing the many conversations, but one slide stands out from the series; Eye editor John L Walters shared this quote from William Owen’s excellent 1991 book ‘Modern Magazine Design.’ It sums up much of what was discussed, and identifies the theme of iteration that links magazine-making and business startups – two factors that link all the featured speakers.
