The Flatplan

The Flatplan

The Flatplan is magCulture’s new one-day masterclass in the art of making magazines. We’re bringing together a group of expert editors, designers, printers and distributors who’ll cover everything you need to create a successful publication. You’ll leave with the knowledge needed to develop your abstract idea into a physical magazine people will want to buy and read.

What’s the format?
Our guest speakers will share their knowledge in a series of presentations throughout the day. There will also be time to talk informally with speakers and fellow attendees.

We’ll start at the magCulture Shop with breakfast and coffee. magCulture founder Jeremy Leslie will open the morning session with an overview of the indie magazine scene. Then we’ll invite attendees to share their magazine ideas before we hear from our first two guest speakers.

We’ll then head to a nearby cafe, where we’ll hear from our third speaker over lunch, before making our way over to our friends at SHED who’ll be hosting the afternoon session and closing drinks.

The day’s talks will come under three categories:

Developing your idea
Identifying your USP
Believing you can make it happen

Getting your magazine into shops
Promoting via social media

Who’ll be speaking?
Jeremy Leslie, director, magCulture
Danielle Pender, founder and editor, Riposte
Kirsten Algera, co-editor-in-chief, MacGuffin
Simon Esterson, art director, Eye
Angharad Lewis, author, So You Want to Publish a Magazine
Alison Branch, Managing director, Park Communications
Sasha Simic, Central Books
Dan Sandison, editor-in-chief, Mundial
Sabine Zetteler, founder, Zetteler Creative Publicity

Who is the day for?
More and more people are excited by the idea of publishing their own magazine, but actually doing so can be daunting. We’ve created The Flatplan specifically to help people overcome this. You may have no experience at all, or some experience of parts of the publishing process; you may have a great idea for a magazine and wonder what the next steps are, or have already started the process but be looking for further guidance.

The day will provide practical advice as well as creative inspiration to help you achieve your ambitions. We’d love to see your magazine make its way onto the magCulture Shop shelves!

Once you’ve made your booking, you’ll be invited to tell us more about your idea so we can tailor the day accordingly.
