Alder #4

200 x 280 mm, 148 pages
Scotland
First published in 2022
Founder and editor: Mary Arnold-Forster

Celebrating a love for rural Scotland, Alder is an architecture magazine that is ‘as much about landscape, patterns of life, materials, colours and politics as it is about singular buildings or art objects’.

Published by architect Mary Arnold-Foster, this fourth issue brings together the work of award-winning architect Peter Wormesley—featuring Gala Fairydean Stadium and the Bernat Klein Studio—alongside the late Shetland-based architect Richard Gibson, known for several housing projects on the island including his own naval-inspired home, complete with a spiral staircase supported by a boat mast. Readers are also invited to wander off-grid: to discover a 20th-century Episcopalian church tucked away in the Highlands, explore a boat-building course at the Archipelago Folkschool near Bunessan, and meet members of Scoraig’s minute 60-person community—where adaptability and ingenuity are essential to life in a rugged landscape without mains electricity.

Expect plenty of craggy landscapes, wooden interiors, and the beautiful Scottish coast.
