A partially Risograph-printed quarterly of art and writing, Scary Boots is a self-described ‘little magazine’ with ‘its feet in the slime’, each issue focussing on an aspect of human experience.
This time presenting itself in a red fade cover with flashes of colour throughout, the issue themed is ‘Ritual’, examining the silent and loud repetitions that shape our identities. Carefully curated short stories and poetry are accompanied by charming illustrations and visuals throughout. It opens with thoughts of ritualistic intimacy in the editors letter, and moves on to reader’s rituals—such as a cat with OCD—and stories of the rituals of drugtaking, restaurant dinners, jewellery and the Christmas edition of the Radio Times magazine.
Elsewhere, US novelist Katherine Faw shares a preview of her next novel, featuring precise screen directions in a cherry red on mint (something Elias discussed in detail at our recent launch of the issue); a watery New Moon ritual by Clare Elliot; and regular contributor Sienna Murdoch responds to the theme with her ever-surprising geline sculptures.
