‘L’Appel Du Vide’
The third issue of the brilliant, independent journal of literary and artistic offcuts, collected from the leftovers and scraps of other projects and jobs.
Put together by Rod Stanley, founder of award-winning, discontinued broadsheet Good Trouble, and novelist Mark Blacklock, and designed by Richard Turley (Nuts, Civilization) and Julia Schäfer (Nuts).
Includes writing by Amy Gillies, Philippa Snow, Irfan Master, Karen Whiteson and Gavin Weale.
On the design: ‘The editors gave us the void, the possessed pigs, Hitler’s gonad, power chords, fractal noise, panic, and a generous amount of existential dread. We gave them pink and black. Pink, of course, is also the colour of pigs—so it felt only right to let the pigs have their say.’ As with the previous issue, the entire thing has been laid out using Microsoft Word’s limited layout options, contributing to its distinctively rebellious feel.
On the Journal
‘A magazine built of leftovers from other projects and designed using Microsoft Word may not sound the most exciting prospect. Yet new launch Offal demonstrates just how useful such limitations can be.’
