‘For the creative and curious’
Published quarterly, Uppercase is a joyful attempt to boost its readers’ creativity. As Janine Vangool, the woman behind the mag explains, the publication is ‘a playful exploration of creativity, an affinity for vintage ephemera, and a love of typography.’
This edition aims to uplift art that is inherently human, amid rapid technological advancement and the burgeoning use of AI in contemporary artworks. Uppercase #68 ruminates on the role that earth, water, air and fire have long played in visual art, honing in on a love of the handmade and handcrafted.
Opening with a guide to creative resistance penned by artist and writer Meera Lee Patel, followed by a statement about AI from the editorial team, the magazine goes on to consider this elemental framework through various features such as Tom Froese’s ‘Rewilding My Digital Art Process’, a look at vintage graphics in advertising, and an homage to Black female musicians and their connection to the elements.
