Netherlands-based arts and culture publication Simulacrum explores a different theme with every issue. Platforming topics from both historical and contemporary perspectives, their features are written by both established experts and up-and-coming writers (student writers are welcome here).
This latest issue examines the theme of ‘Libido’, looking beyond a two-dimensional or stereotypical interpretation of the word, instead delving into its ubiquity and meaning within a society that continues to ‘suppress, manipulate, and demonise sexual desires.’ Contributors unpick oppositional frameworks surrounding subject and object, active and passive, and pleasure and pain, weaving in socio-political themes such as gender roles and identity.
The image section of this edition is furnished by a selection of drawings by contemporary draftsman Lumierebelge, that invite us to consider the nature of our own erotic obsessions.
