Untapped #3

128 x 278mm, 72 pages, plus tipped in section and foldouts.
New York, USA
Annual, since 2023
Editor: Tiffany Jow
Art director: Yeliz Secerli

This magazine seeks to show how the everyday infrastucture around us might be used to improve the spaces we live in and objects we rely on. It is an editorially independent initiative of US design company Henrybuilt. ‘We believe that the built environment is about more than news and aspirational interiors, or academic philosophizing and critique. It is also about something bigger: our lives.’

An interesting object in its own right, with multiple fold outs and cut back pages, this third edition investigates the idea of usefulness, unpacking the impact that design has on people. Financial Times architecture correspondent Edwin Heathcote deconstructs architectural language; Michele Oka Doner asks if certain objects and spaces can connect us with our primal selves; Sarah Archer examines Formafantasma’s take on traditonal Amercian furniture designs.

On the Journal
At work with Tiffany Jow: ‘The design reflects Untapped’s ethos. Our stories focus on ideas and take the time  to unpack them (most stories are around 2,000 words), make sense of them, show how they are relevant for readers. We invest heavily in our writers, and having scant images is a way to tell readers to focus on the text.’
