‘Last to breaking news’

The original slow journalism magazine, looking back at the news with the (sweet, sweet) benefit of hindsight. A staple on the magCulture shelves.

Covering April, May, and June 2026, editors Rob Orchard and Marcus Webb open this issue ruminating on ‘how simultaneously impressive and reprehensible our species can be,’ recalling the juxtaposition of news stories that crowded headlines over this three month period. Inside, Justin Salhani touches base on the events unfolding in Lebanon earlier this year, exploring the history of the war with Israel, and the US’s involvement in the conflict; and Julie Bourdin delves into escalating violence in South Africa spurred on by anti–migrant sentiment, reporting on the threatening deadline declared by vigilante groups for migrants to leave the country.

On the happier side of the equation, late artist David Hockney is remembered through his friendship with the granddaughter of Celia Birtwell—his greatest muse—Scarlett Clark, who recalls his ‘brilliant laugh’ and infectious passion for painting; and Marcus Webb reports on the heartwarming advancements of a new veterinary hospital at London Zoo, made possible through an anonymous donation of 20 million pounds in May this year.

On the Journal
At Work With editor Rob Orchard, from 2014: ‘The idea of the magazine—and slow journalism in general—is to produce something of substance, something permanent that’s worth treasuring and revisiting, a real antidote to throwaway news. ’
