‘The journal of design’

Quarterly Disegno is devoted to exploring the many facets of design and its impact on the world today.

This issue for Autumn 2026 is dedicated to ‘transformation’ in design, opening with a feature on Amsterdam-based visual artist Elisa van Joolen’s EVJ rentable plastic shopping bag series, which repositions the consumer as ‘caretaker’. Elsewhere, editor Oli Strafford tests a new voice messenger designed for children, sharing research on the impact of the smartphone on welfare, and weighing up the efficacy and responsibility of product design in protecting young people today; Malika Leiper pays a visit to Kilubukila, the Kinshasa-based atelier of the Congolese material research studio sustaining the traditional craft of raffia through innovation; and Lia Forslund profiles Fredrik Paulsen, speaking to the Swedish designer about the self-described ‘anti-design’ ethos of his colourful furniture collection, Joy Objects.

On the Journal:
‘In his introduction to the magazine, editor Oli Stratford admits that his own definition of the word ‘design’ is fractured; ‘What even is design? To tell you the truth, we at Disegno have no idea.’ Disegno generates content that looks at the impact of design both artistically and politically, and not just at the ins and outs of how things are made.’ READ MORE
