Created by friends Maeve Bowman and Sandy Christ (part of the team here at magCulture), Exotic Foods/Astride is a thoughtfully crafted, dual-sided riso zine exploring both creators’ experiences of dual-heritage and what it means to exist across multiple cultures and ways of being.
In Exotic Food, Maeve lingers in the snack aisle, finding comfort in treats that connect her different cultural histories—from Monster Munch, Colin the Caterpillar, and Scampi fries to ggobokchip, Soju rice liquor and chocosongi. On the flip side, Astride follows Sandy as she reflects on moving beyond being ‘in between’ to instead, ‘embodying double,’ rendered through delicate, watercolour-style illustrations. Deeply intimate and infused with nostalgia, this zine is a small but profoundly beautiful exploration of identity and belonging.
