Good Sport #7

138 x 206 mm, 148 pages
Melbourne, Australia
Co-founders and editors: Ben Clement and Matt Willocks
Graphic design: Joshua Briones-Yap

The Aussie-born ‘magazine out of left field’ seeks to present the positive side of sport, looking and listening deeper to present a more nuanced narrative. Good Sport returns to our shelves after a few years, though now smaller in size and with a relatively pared-back design.

This seventh issue is themed ‘The Future of Sport’, exploring emerging developments across the industry, as well as the theories that underpin them. According to the editors, whilst it has become apparent that sport today revolves around money, data, and score-tracking, it is also ‘the steady work of small pockets of people whose practice insists, daily, on care.’

Inside, Pilot editor-in-chief Dagny Tepper unpacks her skepticism of biohacking, exploring how the use of purported self-optimising technology relies on the paradoxical interplay of self-regulation and relinquished bodily autonomy; designer and creative director Gabriel Fontana breaks down the thought process behind his inclusive physical education program Multiform, examining representation in the field; and Kim Boram, artistic director of Ambiguous Dance Company, shares her thoughts on the instinctual nature of dance.

On the Journal:

‘Australian title Good Sport is a different kind of sports magazine, setting aside stats and fans to concentrate on sport as a metaphor for broader human activities: creativity, education and growth…’
