Kinfolk has become so familiar that it’s hard to imagine just how radical its minimal, proto-mindfulness, clean lines and clean living aesthetic was when it first appeared back in 2011. 15 years later, it’s a different magazine, more relaxed and open even if its roots are in the same place.
This is ‘The Play Issue,’ with editor John Burns making an important distinction in his introduction: ‘There is a significant difference between being childish and being childlike. Where childishness implies regression, to be childlike is something else entirely. To remain open, imaginative, and willing to experiment…’
The issue explores pathways to play, through toy designer Cas Holman, sculptor Carsten Holler, basketball player Kyle Kuzma, and a visit to a Furry festival in Atlanta. Plus K-pop group Balming Tiger, a look at John Outram’s playful building Sphinx Hill, and an essay about prediction betting.
