Issue 23 is an ode to Hydra, the Greek island where, in the words of poet Sophia de Mello, ‘there is the penetrating clarity of a god's gaze’. What is it about Hydra? This new release adds to at least two other magazines about the island currently on our shelves.
Co-editor Lina Stefanou introduces the issue, describing her arrival on the island and sharing her impressions of life there today. She focuses on Hydra’s people—the artists it has seduced and the heroes it has—and the way their stories intertwine. The issue unfolds as a series of fashion editorials and interviews help the reader discover Hydra: its people, its historic landmarks and architecture, its museums, bars and tavernas.
Writer Josh Hickey—the founder of the Hydra Book Club and its magazine The Journal of the Hydra Book Club—reflects on the many authors who were inspired by the island; painter Bill Pownall offers the inevitable reminiscences of Leonerd Coehn’s time there; and the reader is shown into Maria Joanou’s house and its collection of photography.
It’s a suitably sumptuous issue, and will make you want to visit the island.
