‘A most humble and universal tool’
Gentle on the eyes and in the hands, Pencil is a new title produced entirely in, well, pencil! Everything from the cover art to images, texts and even page numbers inside were originally handwritten or drawn using graphite, reproduced on pages that feel appropriately notebook-esque. It’s an ode to reconnecting with analog tools away from digital distractions because, as editor Sasha Wizansky writes, ‘entire worlds can emerge from a single pencil.’
This ‘Letter Writing’ edition is devoted to ‘correspondence, missives, parcel and post.’ Playing host to handwritten features that range from satirical to serious. Enhanced by the personality of each author’s penmanship, and accompanied throughout by a variety of lively illustrations. Inside, readers can expect instructions on how to mail a potato, a catalogue of commonplace yet compelling vocabulary to brighten your day—from ‘green hat’ to ‘quartet’, the plight of a confessional post card that arrived too late and with no explanation, plus a whole host of other features hinged around handwritten correspondence.
