Berlin-based literary and art journal Sand returns with their 29th issue, themed ‘Cocoon’. Across four sections—Fiction, Art, Poetry and Creative Non-Fiction—contributors explore the protective shell as spaces for retreat, transformation, recuperation as well as a boundary from external harm.
On the cover and inside, Angie Quick‘s flesh like brushstrokes portray the physical sanctuary of the cocoon as somewhere between vulnerability and intimacy. Alongside her work, other artists, writers and poets offer their own nuanced responses to the theme. The issue opens with Jeannetta Craigwell-Graham‘s short story ‘Daughter Shed’, portraying an Indigenous woman in mid-17th century Barbados as she undergoes a profound metamorphosis that offers the possibility to challenge oppressive structures and systems.
