‘Board games are beautiful’
A magazine about the craft, creativity and community of board games. It is named after the oldest known board game, dating back to around 3,000 BC in Egypt.
This Autumn 2026 edition opens, as usual, with a generous selection of curious and fantastical board games expected over the coming year. Elsewhere, you’ll find features sure to spark a delightful feeling of play: Vital Lacerda, recognised for creating intimidating yet expansive games, discusses his intentions behind the complexities of his world-building and shares the thorough processes that go into bringing his games to life. Hendrik Breuer revisits the 30-year-old game ‘El Grande’ and commends it for its trust in players to think unconventionally with tactics and in relation to immediate time; and the nuanced differences between video games and board games, but also their surprising ability to coexist and interact together.
On the Journal
At Work With editor Dan Jolin: ‘It’s a wonderfully social activity—far more so than online video gaming, which has turned pretty toxic in some quarters. If anything, I’d say sitting down at a table with friends, family, or even strangers to share the joy of a board game – whether that’s at home, down the pub, in a board-game café, or at a gaming event – is less ‘geeky’ than sitting at home by yourself and playing on the PlayStation.’
